   Gold Museum

   The largest collection of pre-Hispanic goldwork in the world, some 55,000 pieces of gold and tumbaga from the Muisca, Quimbaya, Tairona and Calima. The Muisca raft, a votive model of a chieftain on a lake, is the object the El Dorado legend attaches to.

   Primary Cathedral of Bogotá

   The neoclassical cathedral on Plaza de Bolívar, finished in 1823 after four earlier churches on the site fell to earthquakes or bad foundations. The tomb of the city's founder, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, is inside, along with that of the independence hero Antonio Nariño.

   La Candelaria

   The colonial quarter on the slope below Monserrate, of one and two-storey houses in ochre and blue along narrow streets. The Gold Museum, the Botero, the presidential palace and most of the city's universities are within its bounds, which is why the streets fill with students.

   Colombian National Museum

   The oldest museum in Colombia, founded in 1823 and housed since 1948 in the Panóptico — a radial prison of 1874 whose cells are now galleries. Twenty thousand objects run from pre-Hispanic archaeology to Botero and Doris Salcedo.

   Plaza de Bolívar

   The main square, called Plaza Mayor until 1821, with the cathedral, the Capitol, the city hall and the Palace of Justice around it. Tenerani's bronze of Bolívar, set up in 1846, was the first public monument in the city; llama handlers and pigeon feed occupy the rest.

   Usaquén

   A colonial village founded in 1539 and absorbed by Bogotá in 1954, now the north's most attractive quarter, with its old plaza and 1665 church surrounded by tower blocks. The Sunday flea market spills through the cobbled streets around it.

   Botero Museum

   A museum in a colonial house on Calle 11, given to the country by Fernando Botero in 2000 on condition it never charge admission. It holds 123 of his own works and 85 he collected — Picasso, Chagall, Bacon, Monet — and takes over half a million visitors a year.

   Abou Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque

   The principal mosque of Bogotá, serving a Colombian Muslim community of a few thousand and named for the first caliph. Friday prayers draw worshippers from across the city; the country's largest mosque is in Maicao on the Caribbean coast.

   Bogotá Museum of Modern Art

   The modern art museum, in a raw concrete building of 1985 by Rogelio Salmona on Calle 24, and the institution that introduced Colombia to the international avant-garde from the 1960s. Its programme leans towards Latin American contemporary work.

    Bogotá Botanical Garden

    Colombia's largest botanical garden, opened in 1955 and named for the Spanish botanist who led the eighteenth-century royal expedition. Its glasshouse recreates the páramo — the high Andean wetland found only in Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela — inside the city.

   Simon Bolivar Park

   A 400-hectare complex of park, lake and stadium west of the centre, and the largest green space in Bogotá. Rock al Parque, the free festival that draws several hundred thousand people over three days each June, is held on its lawns.

   Monserrate Sanctuary

   A pilgrimage shrine on the peak that rises 3,152 metres above sea level behind Bogota, reached by funicular or cable car. The church was built between 1650 and 1657 and draws pilgrims to its statue of the Fallen Christ.

   Tren Turistico de la Sabana

   A weekend heritage railway running steam trains from Sabana station across the savanna to Zipaquirá, where the salt cathedral is cut two hundred metres into a working mine. The line dates from the early twentieth century, and a papayera band plays in the carriages.

   Salitre Magico

   An amusement park beside Simón Bolívar Park, with roller coasters and a big wheel, opened in 1973 and rebuilt in the 1990s. It sits directly next to the city's largest green space, so families combine the two.

   Santamaría Bullring

   A bullring of 1931 in Mudéjar brick seating 14,500, a national monument since 1984. Bullfighting was banned in Bogotá in 2012, allowed again by the courts in 2017, and prohibited nationwide from 2027; the ring is used mostly for concerts.

   Bogotá Colombia Temple

   A Latter-day Saints temple dedicated in 1999 on Calle 127, the first in Colombia and now one of two. It serves congregations across the country, and only members in good standing may enter beyond the lobby.

   Museo Casa de Moneda

   A numismatic museum in the building where the Spanish crown struck gold coin from 1620, the first mint in the Americas to do so. The presses and dies are shown with the currency, and it is free, as are the adjoining Botero and Miguel Urrutia museums.

   93 Park

   A small park on Calle 93 in El Chicó, ringed by restaurants and bars and the social centre of north Bogotá. Its Christmas lights and open-air concerts draw crowds; by day it is where the surrounding offices eat lunch.

   El Chicó

   An affluent district of Chapinero laid out in the mid-twentieth century as an English-style garden suburb, its low houses on tree-lined streets now mostly converted to restaurants, galleries and offices. The Zona T and Parque de la 93 are within walking distance.

    Museo de Arte Miguel Urrutia

    An art museum in La Candelaria run by the Banco de la República, named for the economist who directed it, holding Latin American modern and contemporary art. It connects internally with the Gold Museum and the Botero, and admission to all three is free.
