Burgas sits between the Black Sea and a chain of lagoons, and the salt lakes north of the city draw flamingos and pelicans on the migration route down from the Danube.

The Sea Garden runs the length of the beach. Nesebar, a World Heritage town crammed onto a rock peninsula with a dozen medieval churches, is thirty-five kilometres north; Sozopol is south.

A Roman colony of veterans founded by Vespasian near the lagoons at Burgas, and later a bishopric. Walls, baths and a paved street have been excavated and the site is an archaeological reserve with a small museum.

Archaeological Museum

The ethnographic museum of Burgas, in a merchant's house of the 1870s. Its rooms cover the dress, crafts and household life of the Strandzha region, including the fire-dancing that survives in villages nearby.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Church
The largest church in Burgas, built between 1897 and 1907 to the design of the Italian architect Riccardo Toscani on the site of the small wooden church that served the town before the Liberation. Three naves rise 33 metres under its vaults, and it is a monument of national importance.

A domed tomb of the 2nd or 3rd century AD in the necropolis of ancient Anchialo, buried under a mound with its entrance at the foot. A hollow central pillar carries the dome, a Thracian form built by Roman method.
