   Varna Necropolis

   A cemetery of about 4600-4200 BC in the industrial zone, where the oldest worked gold in the world was found — more than three thousand objects weighing over six kilograms, nearly all of it in a handful of graves. It is the earliest clear evidence anywhere of a ranked society.

   Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral

   The largest church in Varna and the third largest cathedral in Bulgaria, after those of Sofia and Vidin. Opened on 30 August 1886, it is the seat of the metropolitan of Varna and Preslav, and its domes and bell tower have become a symbol of the city.

   Euxinograd

   A royal summer palace of the 1880s north of Varna, built for Prince Alexander of Battenberg in a French chateau style. Its park and vineyard still produce wine under the palace name; the state uses it for official guests and it opens only in part.

   Varna Archaeological Museum

   The archaeological museum of Varna, which began on 3 June 1888 as a department of the municipal library. It occupies the former girls' school, designed in neo-Renaissance by the architect Petko Momchilov and built between 1892 and 1898; the world's oldest worked gold is displayed in it.

   Roman Thermae in Varna

   The remains of a Roman bath complex in the southeastern part of Varna, called Odessos in Roman times. Built in the later second century, they are the fourth largest surviving in Europe and the largest in the Balkans.

   Aladzha Monastery

   A medieval Orthodox cave monastery in woodland seventeen kilometres north of central Varna and three kilometres west of Golden Sands. It was cut on several levels into a karst cliff twenty-five metres high at the edge of the Franga plateau, with two small catacombs attached.

   Bulgarian torpedo boat Drazki

   A torpedo boat of the Bulgarian navy built in the early twentieth century. Her name means the daring one, and one boat of the class is preserved under that name as a museum ship at Varna.

   Varna Aquarium

   A public aquarium in the Black Sea city of Varna in Bulgaria. It shows the life of the Black Sea across more than 140 species of fish, together with freshwater and Mediterranean species and rarities from the open ocean; it began on 6 January 1906 at the wish of Ferdinand I.

   Boris Georgiev City Art Gallery

   The municipal art gallery of Varna in Bulgaria. It has occupied the building at 1 Lyuben Karavelov Street since 1944 and was named in 1999 after Boris Georgiev, the painter born in the city, who lived from 1888 to 1962.

    Sea Garden
