   Plovdiv Roman theatre

   A Roman theatre of the reign of Domitian in the middle of Plovdiv, seating between five and seven thousand, and among the best preserved anywhere. It was found by a landslide in 1972, and opera and rock concerts are staged in it through the summer.

   Dzhumaya Mosque

   The oldest mosque in Bulgaria still in use, built in 1363-64 after the Ottoman capture of the city and rebuilt under Murad I in the fifteenth century. Nine lead domes cover it, and the painted floral decoration inside is eighteenth-century.

   Plovdiv Regional Ethnographic Museum

   An ethnographic museum in a merchant's house of 1847 in the old town, its symmetrical facade and undulating eaves the finest example of the Plovdiv National Revival style. Forty thousand objects cover crafts, costume and the rose-oil and tobacco trades.

   Cathedral of St Louis

   The Catholic cathedral of Plovdiv, named after Louis IX of France and rebuilt in 1932 after fire, and one of the largest Catholic churches in Bulgaria. It is co-cathedral of the Sofia-Plovdiv diocese with St Joseph's in the capital.

   Red Church

   A late Roman basilica near Perushtitsa, fifteen kilometres southwest of Plovdiv, built around the year 500 and partly standing. Its brickwork is unusual among Bulgarian churches of the period and gives it the name; traces of frescoes survive inside.

   Alyosha Monument

   An eleven-metre concrete Soviet soldier on Bunardzhik hill, raised between 1954 and 1957 on a six-metre granite plinth. Attempts to remove it since 1989 have all been blocked in the courts, and it has become the city's most argued-over landmark.

   Plovdiv Synagogue

   Built in 1892 in a courtyard off the old commercial street, this is one of only two synagogues still in use in Bulgaria. The congregation follows the Sephardi rite, and the painted Moorish interior under its central dome was restored in the 2000s.

   Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis

   A basilica of the mid-fourth century, the largest early Christian church found in Bulgaria at almost two thousand square metres, with two layers of floor mosaic including eighty-six bird figures. A museum was built over it and opened in 2021.

   Plovdiv Roman Stadium

   A stadium of the second century AD seating about thirty thousand, built for the Pythian Games in the Roman provincial capital of Thrace. Fourteen rows of the curved end survive under a shopping street, reached from an underground gallery beneath the main square.

    Philippopolis

    The ancient city on these three hills, founded as a Thracian settlement, taken by Philip II of Macedon in 342 BC and named for him, then made capital of Roman Thrace. Continuous occupation from about 6000 BC makes Plovdiv one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe.

   Nebet Tepe

   The hill where the city began, settled from about 4000 BC and fortified by the Thracians in enormous unmortared blocks. Ruins of the acropolis walls, later rebuilt by Macedonians and Romans, stand at the top, with the best view over the old town.

   Forum of Philippopolis

   The Roman forum of Philippopolis, a rectangular plaza of about twenty thousand square metres surrounded by administrative buildings, a library, a mint and the odeon. Part of it is exposed beside the main post office in the city centre.

   Church of the Holy Mother of God, Plovdiv

   A National Revival church of 1844 on Nebet Tepe in the old town, on a site that has held a church since the ninth century. Its pink and green bell tower of 1881 stands separate from the nave, and it is the metropolitan cathedral of Plovdiv.

   Small Basilica

   An early Christian basilica on Maria Luiza Boulevard, found during building work in 1988 and now under a protective shell. Its baptistery floor mosaic of deer at a fountain, laid in the fifth century, is the reason to go in.

   Synagogue of Philippopolis

   The ruins of a third-century synagogue on Maria Luiza Boulevard, the only ancient Jewish place of worship found in Bulgaria. Its mosaic floor carries a donor inscription in Greek, evidence of a Jewish community in Philippopolis under Roman rule.

   Plovdiv Regional History Museum

   The regional history museum, founded in 1951 and covering the fifteenth century to the present in three separate historic buildings. The 1876 April Uprising, the unification of 1885 and Bulgarian publishing are the three subjects, one to each house.

   Tashkyopryu Mosque

   A sixteenth-century Ottoman mosque in Plovdiv whose name means stone bridge, from the crossing it stood beside. It was closed after an arson attack in 2016 and reopened in 2025 following restoration.

   Southern district

   One of Plovdiv's six districts, with 79,330 residents, taking in the quarter locals call Little Paris along with Belomorski, Ostromila and Komatevo. It is largely postwar housing south of the railway.

    The central district of Plovdiv, with 84,431 residents, holding the Roman stadium, the odeon, the ancient theatre and the Sahat Tepe clock tower. Almost everything a visitor comes for is inside its boundary.
