   Love Canal

   A neighbourhood in Niagara Falls built over a chemical dump of 21,000 tonnes, whose leaking drums were traced in 1977 to unexplained illnesses among residents. The evacuation of 950 families led directly to the US Superfund law of 1980; most of the site is fenced and empty.

   Fort Erie

   A British fort across the Niagara River in Ontario, taken by the Americans in 1814 and besieged for two months in the bloodiest fighting of that war on Canadian soil. It was rebuilt in the 1930s and is staffed by costumed interpreters in summer.

   USS Little Rock

   A Cleveland-class light cruiser of 1945, later converted to carry Talos missiles, and flagship of the Second Fleet. She is the only surviving Cleveland-class ship and is moored at Buffalo's naval park, open from the bridge down to the missile magazine.

   USS Croaker

   A Gato-class submarine of 1944 that sank the Japanese cruiser Nagara on her first patrol. She was brought up the St Lawrence in 1988 and sits at the Buffalo waterfront with her conning tower open to visitors.

   St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo

   The Catholic cathedral of Buffalo at 50 Franklin Street, built between 1851 and 1855 to a design by Patrick Keely in early English Gothic, with a spire of eighty metres. Its Hook and Hastings organ of 1876 is among the largest surviving instruments of its date.

   USS The Sullivans

   A Fletcher-class destroyer named for five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa, all killed when USS Juneau went down in November 1942. Their deaths led the navy to keep siblings apart on the same ship; she is moored at Buffalo as a National Historic Landmark.

   Buffalo Zoo

   The seventh oldest zoo in the United States, founded in 1875 in Delaware Park, on twenty-four hectares. Its 1912 Elephant House and the Reptile House by Frank Lloyd Wright's associates are on the National Register.

   Our Lady of Victory Basilica

   A basilica at Lackawanna finished in 1926, built entirely from small donations that Father Nelson Baker collected while running an orphanage and hospital. The interior holds four hundred angels in marble and stone and the largest dome of any church in the region.

    St. Adalbert's Basilica, Buffalo

    A Polish parish church on the East Side, built between 1886 and 1891 by immigrants who worked the grain elevators and rail yards, and raised to basilica rank in 1907 — the first Polish church in the United States to be so designated. Its congregation closed in 2008.

   Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

   The Ansley Wilcox house at 641 Delaware Avenue, where Theodore Roosevelt took the presidential oath in the library on 14 September 1901 after McKinley died of gunshot wounds from the Pan-American Exposition. That room has been restored to the hour.

   Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park

   A naval park on the Buffalo River holding a destroyer, a cruiser and a submarine side by side — the largest inland naval display in the United States. All three can be walked through, and the park is closed in winter when the river freezes.

   Buffalo History Museum

   The city history museum in the only permanent building left from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, a Greek Revival hall by George Cary. Its collection covers the Erie Canal, the grain trade and the McKinley assassination that happened on the fairground outside.

   Allentown

   A historic district of Victorian and Federal houses around Allen Street, one of the largest in the country with over eight hundred protected buildings. Its outdoor art festival each June has run since 1958 and draws about 400,000 people.

   Black Rock

   A northwest neighbourhood that was an independent town and rival port until Buffalo won the Erie Canal terminus in 1825, then absorbed it in 1853. Its name came from a black limestone shelf in the Niagara River, blasted away for the canal.

   Elmwood Village

   A neighbourhood of tree-lined streets and Victorian houses along Elmwood Avenue, between downtown and Delaware Park. Restaurants and independent shops fill the avenue, and in 2007 the American Planning Association named it one of the great neighbourhoods in America.

   Temple Beth Zion

   A Reform synagogue at 805 Delaware Avenue, built in 1967 to a design by Max Abramovitz with ten undulating concrete panels for the Commandments and Ben Shahn stained glass. Its predecessor burned down in 1961.

   Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens

   A glasshouse of 1900 in South Park, designed by Lord & Burnham as three connected domes on an Olmsted plan, and one of the largest public conservatories in the United States. Eleven greenhouses run off the central palm dome.

   South Buffalo

   The southern third of the city, settled by Irish labourers who dug the Erie Canal and later worked the Lackawanna steel plant. The parish churches and the bars along South Park Avenue are what the mills left; the plant closed in 1983.

    Blue Sky Mausoleum

    A stepped granite monument in Forest Lawn Cemetery, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1928 for his client Darwin Martin and finally built in 2004. Twenty-four crypts step down a slope with no roof at all — the sky is the ceiling, which is the name.
