   Gateway Arch

   Missouri Botanical Garden

   Founded in 1859 and the oldest botanical garden in continuous operation in the United States. The Climatron of 1960 was the first geodesic dome used as a greenhouse, and the fourteen-acre Japanese garden is among the largest outside Japan.

   Gateway Arch National Park

   The smallest national park in the United States at thirty-four hectares, created around the Arch and the old courthouse where the Dred Scott case was first tried. The museum under the Arch was rebuilt in 2018 and now tells the westward expansion with the dispossession included.

   Saint Louis Art Museum

   An art museum in Forest Park, in the Palace of Fine Arts built for the 1904 world's fair — the only building of that fair meant to be permanent. It holds the largest collection of Max Beckmann anywhere, and admission is free.

   Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis

   A Catholic cathedral completed in 1914 in the Central West End of St Louis and the mother church of the archdiocese. Known as the New Cathedral, it holds one of the largest mosaic installations in the world, laid over four decades.

   Monks Mound

   The largest earthwork in the Americas, thirty metres high and covering more ground at its base than the Great Pyramid. It was the centre of Cahokia, a city of perhaps twenty thousand around 1100 — larger than London at the time — which was abandoned within three centuries.

   Saint Louis Zoo

   A zoo in Forest Park, descended from the walk-through flight cage built for the 1904 world's fair, which still stands and is the oldest such aviary in the country. Admission has been free since the city voted a tax to support it in 1916.

   Forest Park

   At 1,326 acres one of the largest urban parks in the United States, opened in 1876 and the setting for both the 1904 World's Fair and the 1904 Olympic Games. The St. Louis Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum, Science Center and the Muny open-air theatre all stand inside it.

   A neighbourhood of townhouses and private streets on the edge of Forest Park, built for the 1904 fair and now the city's densest walkable quarter. T. S. Eliot and Tennessee Williams both lived in it, and the medical school anchors its western end.

   The Hill

   The Italian quarter, settled from the 1890s by workers from Lombardy and Sicily who came for the clay mines. It is where toasted ravioli was invented, the fire hydrants are painted in the Italian colours, and the bakeries still sell to people who moved away decades ago.

   Dutchtown

   The southern centre of German settlement in 19th-century St. Louis; the name comes from Deutsch, not the Netherlands. Concordia Seminary and Concordia Publishing House both began here, and the towers of St Anthony of Padua still mark the skyline above Meramec Street.

   Lafayette Square

   A neighbourhood in St Louis in Missouri, laid out around Lafayette Park, which was created by ordinance in 1836 and is the oldest park in the city. Its Victorian houses survived a tornado in 1896 and were restored from the 1970s.
