Boa Vista is the desert island of Cape Verde — Sahara dust blows across and settles as dune, and its beaches run some fifty-five kilometres in all, most of them empty.

Loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest through the summer in numbers matched at few other beaches in the world, and humpbacks pass between March and May. A wrecked freighter sits on the north shore.

    Praia de Santa Mónica

    A beach on the southwest of Boa Vista running for kilometres with nothing built on it, reached down a sand track from Povoação Velha. Turtles nest along it in summer and the wind blows almost constantly.

    Forte Duque de Bragança

    A ruined fort on the islet off Sal Rei, built to protect the anchorage in the centuries when corsairs raided this coast for salt and for slaves. Its walls are half sand now and it is reached by a short boat crossing.

    Nossa Senhora da Conceição church

    A church of 1828 at the edge of Povoação Velha, the oldest settlement on Boa Vista, standing below a rocky hill in a village that the sand is slowly reclaiming.
