   Love Land

   An outdoor sculpture park on the theme of sex, opened in 2004 and made by graduates of a Seoul art school. It exists because Jeju was for decades the honeymoon island for Korean couples who had met only weeks before. Over-eighteens only.

   Hallasan National Park

   Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea at 1,947 metres, with the Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa routes running to the Baengnokdam crater. Permits and cut-off times apply, so the climb has to be planned in advance.

   Samyang-dong

   A district on the north coast of Jeju City with a beach of black volcanic sand, and with one of the largest prehistoric settlements found in Korea — a Bronze Age village dug here and made a national historic site in 1999.

   Jeju National Museum

   The Jeju National Museum covers the history of the island from the kingdom of Tamna to the culture of exile under the Joseon. It is close to the airport, which suits a first or last day.

   Samseonghyeol

   Samseonghyeol is the sanctuary of the three holes from which the three founding demigods of the Tamna kingdom are said to have emerged. The altar among the black pines marks the starting point of Jeju's mythology.

   Nexon Computer Museum

   One of the first permanent museums in Korea given over to computers and video games, opened in Jeju on 27 July 2013. Its 6,900-odd items include early personal computers, consoles and arcade cabinets, many kept working for visitors to play.

   Yakcheonsa

   A Jogye temple in Seogwipo whose main hall rises about thirty metres — among the largest single temple halls in Asia. It is modern, finished in the 1990s, and named for a spring on the site that was held to cure illness.

   Jeju Aerospace Museum

   An aerospace museum in Seogwipo, opened in 2014 at a cost of some 115 billion won. Aircraft on the floor include Korean air force types and a MiG-21, and a separate hall covers the solar system and the Korean satellite programme.

    Hamdeok Beach

    Hamdeok Beach is the main beach of eastern Jeju, with emerald water and the Seowubong headland walk beside it. The bottom shelves gently, which makes it good for families.

   April 3 Jeju Peace Park

   The Jeju April 3 Peace Park is a memorial to the tragedy of the massacres that followed the 1948 uprising. The hall of spirit tablets and the stones for those who were never found carry considerable weight.

   Citrus Museum

   A municipal museum at Seogwipo on Jeju devoted to the citrus fruit. The city runs it, and its subject is the crop that defines the island.

   Bilemot Cave

   One of the longest lava tubes in the world, running some eleven kilometres beneath western Jeju and holding pools, stone pagodas and the bones of animals that fell in. It stays closed to general visitors, opening only for study and occasional guided groups.

   Yongdam-2-dong
