   Gaya Tumuli

   Seven groups of tumuli of the Gaya confederacy, a federation of small states that traded iron across the Yellow Sea between the first and sixth centuries, listed by UNESCO in 2023. Daeseong-dong at Gimhae is the nearest to Busan and pairs with the Gimhae National Museum.

   Beomeosa

   A head temple of the Jogye order on the slope of Geumjeongsan, founded in 678 and the principal temple of Busan. Its 1614 main gate on four stone pillars survives; the forest path from the gate to the main hall and the Sanseong village makgeolli make a half day.

   National Maritime Museum

   A national museum on Yeongdo devoted to the sea, and the third largest museum in Korea, covering navigation, shipbuilding, maritime history and marine life with a large aquarium tank inside. Admission is free.

   United Nations Memorial Cemetery

   The only United Nations cemetery in the world, at Tanggok in Nam district, holding about two thousand dead of the Korean War from eleven countries. The plots are grouped by nation and the sound of it is what visitors remember; the Peace Park and Busan Museum adjoin it.

   Haeundae Beach

   The best-known beach in Korea, 1.5 kilometres of sand backed by a wall of high-rises, and the site of the Busan International Film Festival's outdoor screenings. The Blueline Park beach train runs east along the old railway to Cheongsapo and Songjeong.

   Haedong Yonggungsa

   A temple built on coastal rocks at Gijang, unusual in a country where temples are almost always in the mountains, and the dates of its founding are disputed. Sunrise on 1 January draws crowds; the approach down 108 steps to the sea is the point of it.

   Gwangalli Beach

   A beach in Suyeong district facing the Gwangan Bridge, whose lit span is the reason to come at night. Drone shows run at weekends, and the raw fish halls and café strip behind the sand stay busy late.

   Gimhae National Museum

   A national museum at Gimhae devoted to Gaya, whose ironwork and pottery are its strength — Gaya iron reached Japan and its armour is unlike anything else in Korea. It anchors the Gimhae circuit with the Daeseong-dong tombs and King Suro's tomb.

   Taejongdae

   A cliff park at the southern tip of Yeongdo with a lighthouse and observation platforms, circled by a small road train. On clear days Tsushima is visible about fifty kilometres away, which the signboard makes a point of.

    Busan Modern History Museum

    A museum of Busan's modern history in the 1929 building of the Oriental Development Company, later the American cultural centre. Its photographs and documents of the treaty-port and colonial city make it the right first stop for a walk through the old downtown.

   Giant Digger

   A launched coaster at Lotte World Adventure Busan in the Osiria resort area, built by Mack Rides with linear synchronous motors. It runs beside the sea, which few Korean coasters do.

   Gukje Market

   A market in Jung district that grew from the goods and aid that passed through Busan when the city held about a million refugees during the Korean War. Its food alley and the night market in the adjoining Bupyeong can market are what most people come for.

   Songdo Beach

   The first public bathing beach in Korea, opened in 1913, redeveloped with a cable car across the bay and a curving skywalk out over the water. It is quieter than Haeundae, which is its appeal.

   Queen Suro Tomb

   The tomb attributed to Heo Hwang-ok, queen of King Suro of Geumgwan Gaya, whom the chronicles describe as a princess from Ayodhya — a claim that has produced a modern Indian-Korean connection. It stands at Gimhae with the king's tomb and Gujibong hill.

   Dongnae Hot Spring

   A hot-spring quarter with records going back to the Silla period. Large bathhouses like Hurshimchung make it a fitting way to unwind at the end of a trip.

   Dongnaeeupseong Fortress

   The walls of the Goryeo-era town fortress on Maansan in Dongnae, where the first land battle of the 1592 Japanese invasion was fought and the magistrate Song Sang-hyeon was killed refusing to surrender. The restored north gate, a science park and the Bokcheon tomb museum are on one walk.

   Busan Aquarium

   A large aquarium under the sand at the western end of Haeundae beach, whose shark tunnel is the main draw. Being directly on the beach makes it the standard option in rain or extreme heat.

   Geumjeongsanseong

   The largest mountain fortress in Korea, whose Joseon-era wall runs about eighteen kilometres along the ridges of Geumjeongsan. The climb from Beomeosa to the north gate is the popular route, and the village inside is known for its own makgeolli.

   Busan Museum

   The city museum, open since 1978, covering Busan from prehistory through the Joseon diplomatic missions to Japan and the colonial and war years. It stands beside the UN cemetery, so the two are usually visited together.

    Busanjinseong

    The remains of the fortress at Beomil-dong where the commander Jeong Bal died holding the first assault of the 1592 invasion. The Japanese rebuilt it in their own manner afterwards, and those wall sections survive in a quiet residential district.
