Daegu records the highest summer temperatures in Korea, which is why the country calls it the frying pan — the basin it sits in holds the heat in. The modern history alley runs from Cheongna Hill past a cathedral of 1902 and through lanes where missionaries and independence activists lived, in about an hour on foot.

Kim Kwang-seok street commemorates the singer with murals and buskers. Seomun Market's night stalls do the eating, and Daegu has its own drinking food: grilled pork intestine and raw beef cut in cubes.

Gyesan Cathedral
Gyesan Cathedral is the first Gothic church in the Yeongnam region, and the heart of the modern-history lane walk that links the houses of Yi Sang-hwa and Seo Sang-don with Cheongna Hill. Its twin red brick towers work as the signpost of modern Daegu.

Donghwasa
Donghwasa is a Silla-period temple on the flank of Palgongsan, whose colossal Yaksa Buddha of unification is overwhelming in scale. With the cable car it makes a half-day on the mountain.

Seomun Market

Gyeongsang-gamyeong Park
The site of the Gyeongsang provincial office, established here in the reign of King Seonjo, and of the North Gyeongsang administration from 1910 to 1965. Laid out as a park in 1970 and renamed in 1997, it keeps the governor's hall Seonhwadang and his residence Jingcheonggak.
