Moab lies between two national parks: Arches, which holds over two thousand of them, and Canyonlands, cut into three districts by the Colorado and the Green.

Delicate Arch is a three-kilometre walk up slickrock and best in the last hour of light. Arches requires a timed entry booking in season. The Slickrock trail, marked out in 1969, made mountain biking what it is.

    Arches National Park

    Over two thousand natural stone arches, more than anywhere else on earth, formed where a buried salt bed shifted and cracked the sandstone into fins that then eroded through. Delicate Arch is on the Utah licence plate. Timed entry is required in the busy months.

    Dead Horse Point State Park

    A mesa six hundred metres above a gooseneck of the Colorado, named from a story about horses corralled on the narrow neck and left there. The overlook takes in Canyonlands and the potash evaporation ponds; the closing scene of Thelma and Louise was filmed on the rim.

    Courthouse Wash Pictographs

    A large group of rock paintings under a sandstone cliff at the mouth of Courthouse Wash in Arches National Park north of Moab in Utah. They were made over a very long period and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
