   Wilderness National Park

   A section of the Garden Route park around the town of Wilderness, protecting a chain of lakes, the Touw river estuary and the wetland behind the dunes. The lakes are Ramsar-listed and are paddled rather than driven around.

   Pacaltsdorp

   A suburb of George founded as a mission station and named after Charles Pacalt, the missionary who ran it. Under apartheid it was the coloured township attached to the town but administered separately, with the N2 highway drawn between the two.

   Moederkerk, George

   A Dutch Reformed church whose cornerstone was laid in 1832 and which was finished in 1842, one of the older churches on this coast. It stands on the main axis of the town, which was laid out around it.

   St Mark's Cathedral, George, Western Cape

   The Anglican cathedral of the diocese of George, a small stone church of the 1850s and one of the smallest cathedrals in South Africa. It sits under the yellowwoods a few hundred metres from the Dutch Reformed mother church.

   A railway museum in George occupying a former goods shed, opened in 1998. Its collection covers the narrow-gauge line that ran along the coast to Knysna, including the locomotives that worked it.
