   Horse Memorial

   A memorial in Gqeberha to the horses that died in the South African War of 1899-1902 — a bronze of a soldier kneeling to water his horse, and one of very few monuments anywhere to animals in war.

   New Brighton

   Fort Frederick

   A stone fort built above the mouth of the Baakens river in 1799 to keep the French out of the Cape during the Napoleonic wars. It never fired a shot in anger, and the town that grew below it took its name from the governor's wife.

   Red Location Museum

   A museum opened in 2006 in the oldest shack settlement of New Brighton, in a much-praised building of sawtooth steel meant to echo the corrugated iron around it. It has been closed since 2013, when residents blockaded it over the housing they had been promised instead.

   St Mary's Cathedral, Port Elizabeth

   The Anglican cathedral of Gqeberha and the oldest church in the city, its parish dating from the 1820s when the settlement was still a garrison town below the fort. It became a cathedral when the diocese was created in 1970.

   Campanile (Port Elizabeth)

   A tower of 52 metres raised in 1923 to mark the landing of the British settlers of 1820, with 204 steps climbing past a carillon of bells to a gallery over the harbour. It stands at the foot of the Donkin Reserve.
