   Saint Joseph's Cathedral, Dar es Salaam

   A Gothic cathedral built by German missionaries between 1897 and 1902, its spire the first thing seen from the harbour. It is among the best-preserved colonial buildings in the city and the seat of the archdiocese.

   Askari Monument

   A bronze of an African soldier with fixed bayonet, raised in 1927 to the askari who fought and died in the East African campaign of the First World War. It stands at the crossroads that has served as the city's centre ever since.

   Azania Front Lutheran Church

   A Lutheran church built by German missionaries in 1898, red-tiled and Bavarian in outline but arcaded all round for the heat, standing on the harbour front. It is still a working parish and the most photographed building in the city.
