   Denver Art Museum

   More than 70,000 works in the Civic Center, strongest of all in American Indian and Western American art. Gio Ponti's faceted Martin Building of 1971 was among the first high-rise art museums anywhere; a $150 million rebuilding begun in 2018 reunited it with the rest of the campus.

   Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

   The Catholic cathedral of Denver at Logan Street and Colfax Avenue, built between 1902 and 1912 in French Gothic with twin 64-metre spires and Munich stained glass. It seats 895; Martin Luther King spoke from its pulpit in 1964 and John Paul II visited in 1993.

   Denver Zoo

   A 32-hectare zoo in City Park, founded in 1896 with an orphaned black bear, and the first American zoo to build naturalistic rock enclosures — Bear Mountain, of 1918. It runs on ticket revenue, donations and a regional culture tax.

   Denver Museum of Nature and Science

   A natural history and science museum of 1900 on the edge of City Park, holding Colorado's dinosaurs — Stegosaurus is the state fossil, found nearby — along with a planetarium and an Egyptian collection. The west windows face the whole Front Range.

   Denver Colorado Temple

   A Latter-day Saints temple at Centennial south of Denver, dedicated in 1986, the fortieth in the church and the first in Colorado. It has a single spire and white marble walls; only members may enter beyond the lobby.

   Dinosaur Ridge

   A ridge west of Denver where two rock faces expose Jurassic dinosaur bones on one side and Cretaceous footprints on the other, with the road between them. Marsh and Cope's rivalry began with bones from this hogback in 1877, and Stegosaurus was first described from it.

   Denver Botanic Gardens

   A botanic garden of 1951 by Cheesman Park, whose speciality is plants of arid and high-altitude regions rather than the usual temperate borders. Its alpine collection is among the largest in North America, which suits a city at 1,600 metres.

   Downtown Aquarium, Denver

   An aquarium of 1999 on the South Platte, opened as Colorado's Ocean Journey and now privately run, whose displays follow water from the Colorado headwaters to the Pacific. A restaurant sits inside the main tank room.

   Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys

   A museum of miniatures, dolls and toys founded in 1981, in the 1899 Pearce-McAllister Cottage in Denver. Dolls' houses and room boxes from the eighteenth century onwards make up the collection.

    Colorado Railroad Museum

    Founded in 1959 on 19.5 acres in Golden, where Clear Creek runs between the Table Mountains, to keep the record of Colorado's narrow-gauge mountain railroads. Locomotives and cars stand on the old Colorado and Southern line, and steam trains run on set weekends.

   Elitch Gardens Theme Park

   An amusement park beside the South Platte in downtown Denver, descended from the Elitch Zoological Gardens the Elitch family opened in 1890 on the north-west side. The park moved to its present riverside ground in 1995 and runs from April to October.

   Lakeside Amusement Park

   Opened in 1908 and the last White City-style park left in the United States, still run by the same family on its original ground. The Tower of Jewels rises over the entrance and the wooden Cyclone coaster of 1940 is still running.

   Molly Brown House

   An 1889 house in Capitol Hill, home of Margaret Brown, who survived the Titanic and pressed her lifeboat's crew to go back for swimmers. It was a boarding house by the 1930s and was saved from demolition in 1970 by the campaign that started Denver's preservation movement.

   Downtown

   The financial and entertainment core of Denver, on the ground of the 1858 gold-rush settlement, its street grid still set at forty-five degrees to the rest of the city. The 16th Street pedestrian mall, laid out by I. M. Pei in 1982, runs through the middle of it.

   Heritage Square

   A Victorian-themed shopping village and amusement park at Golden west of Denver, built between 1957 and 1959 as Magic Mountain and reopened as Heritage Square in 1971. It closed in 2015; only the alpine slide operated afterwards.

   Fort Logan National Cemetery

   A national cemetery in southwest Denver on the grounds of an army post founded in 1889, opened for burials in 1950 and holding over 120,000 graves. It is one of the largest national cemeteries in the mountain west.

   Twister II

   A wooden roller coaster at Elitch Gardens, built in 1995 as a copy of Mr Twister — the 1964 coaster at the amusement park's original site, demolished when Elitch's moved downtown. It runs a double out-and-back with a tunnel.

   Cathedral of St. John in the Wilderness

   The Episcopal cathedral of Colorado, built between 1909 and 1911 in Gothic Revival on Clarkson Street, after the previous cathedral burned. Its 1938 Kimball organ, one of the largest in the region, is still in use.

   Confluence Park

   A park at the meeting of Cherry Creek and the South Platte in Lower Downtown, the exact spot where prospectors camped in 1858 and Denver began. Kayakers use the engineered rapids and the Cherry Creek trail starts here.

    Tower of Memories

    A mausoleum of 1926 in Crown Hill Cemetery at Wheat Ridge, built in Italian Renaissance style with a stained glass ceiling. It holds several thousand crypts and niches, and Buffalo Bill's grave is on the mountain nearby.
