   Balata Garden

   Three hectares of private garden ten kilometres above Fort-de-France, made from the 1980s by a horticulturist around his family's creole house. Rope bridges run through the canopy at fifteen metres, and the collection of anthuriums and heliconias is the reason gardeners come.

   A museum on the upper stretch of rue Victor Hugo in Saint-Pierre, Martinique. It occupies a former battery that guarded the bay and tells of the town as it was before the volcanic disaster of 1902, when it was known as the little Paris of the Antilles.

   SS Roraima

   A passenger steamer launched in 1883 by the Quebec Steamship Company of Canada. She lay at anchor in Saint-Pierre when Mount Pelée erupted on 8 May 1902 and sank three days later; 57 of the 68 aboard died.
