Vail opened in 1962 on ground a soldier had noticed while training in the mountains during the war, and laid out a village in Tyrolean style beneath it.
The Back Bowls behind the ridge are the reason it became famous — thousands of acres of open, treeless snow facing south. In summer the same slopes carry wildflowers and the passes open for cycling.
