Key West is the end of the road — the last island of the Florida chain, a hundred and forty-five kilometres from Cuba and further south than any other point in the continental United States.

The Overseas Highway reaches it over forty-two bridges. Hemingway wrote here in the 1930s and his house keeps descendants of his six-toed cats. The crowd applauds the sunset from Mallory Square each evening.

Ernest Hemingway House
The Spanish colonial house where Hemingway lived through the 1930s, bought by his wife's uncle. He wrote Death in the Afternoon and The Snows of Kilimanjaro in the studio over the carriage house. Some sixty cats live on the property, about half of them six-toed and said to descend from his.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park
A Civil War fort held by the Union throughout the war, which is how the blockade closed the Confederacy's Gulf ports. The largest cache of Civil War cannon in the country was found bricked up inside its walls in the 1960s. The beach beside it is the best on the island.

Duval Street
A commercial street a little over two kilometres long running north to south through Key West in Florida, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic. It is named after William Pope Duval, the first territorial governor of Florida.

A painted concrete buoy claiming the southernmost point of the continental United States. It is not: Ballast Key is further south, as is fenced navy ground a few hundred metres away. The sign says ninety miles to Cuba and there is a queue for the photograph all day.

Harry S. Truman Little White House
A wooden naval quarters at Key West where Truman spent a hundred and seventy-five days across eleven visits, working in shirtsleeves. The rooms are kept as they were in 1949, poker table included, and later presidents have used it as a retreat.
