Flores is a small island of pastel houses in Lake Petén Itzá, joined to the mainland by a causeway. The last independent Maya kingdom held out here until 1697.

Tikal is an hour north: temples pushed up through the rainforest canopy, howler monkeys at dawn, and a plaza that was the centre of a city of tens of thousands. Sunrise tours leave in the dark and are worth the alarm.

    Nojpetén

    The island capital of the Itza Maya, and the last independent Maya kingdom — it held out until the Spanish took it in 1697, a hundred and seventy-five years after Cortés. The town of Flores stands directly on top of it, so almost nothing is visible.

    Petén Basin

    A region of the Maya lowlands spanning Petén department in northern Guatemala and Campeche in Mexico. Great Maya centres such as Tikal and Calakmul flourished here from the Late Preclassic through the Classic, and the distinctive Petén style of architecture and inscription came out of it.

    Motul de San José

    A Maya site north of Lake Petén Itzá, anciently called Ik'a, meaning the water of the wind. It was a political and ceremonial centre of middling size, flourishing in the Late Classic between 650 and 950.
