Fukue is the main island of the Gotō chain, west of Nagasaki, where Christians hid for two centuries of persecution and built churches as soon as they could — several are World Heritage.

Dōzaki, in red brick from 1908, is the one most visitors see first. Onidake is a grassed volcanic cone you can walk up in twenty minutes. Takahama beach is as clear as anything in Okinawa, and far emptier.

    Egami Church

    A small wooden church of 1918 on Naru island, built by hidden Christians who came out of two centuries of concealment. The interior is painted with camellia patterns by hand, and it is part of the World Heritage listing of the hidden Christian sites of Nagasaki.

    Ishida Castle

    A castle site at Gotō in Nagasaki prefecture, also well known as Fukue Castle. Work began in 1849 and was completed in 1863, which makes it among the last castles built in Japan.

    Former Gorin Church

    A wooden church built in 1881 and moved to the hamlet of Gorin in 1931, its plain boarded outside hiding a ribbed vault within. One of the oldest churches in the Goto islands, it stands within the UNESCO listing of the hidden Christian sites.

    Dōzaki Church

    A brick church of 1908 on the shore at Dozaki, the first raised in the Goto islands after the ban on Christianity was lifted. It serves now as a museum of the hidden Christians who kept the faith in secret for two and a half centuries.
