   Yama-dera Temple

   Risshaku-ji, founded in 860 and known to all as the Mountain Temple, its halls pinned to the cliffs above the Tachiya valley. A stair of about a thousand steps climbs through the rocks to the Godaido lookout; Basho stopped here in 1689 and wrote of cicadas boring into the stone.

   Bunshōkan

   A cultural venue in central Yamagata, Japan, housed in the former prefectural office and assembly hall, both national important cultural properties. Its formal name is the Yamagata Prefectural Folk Museum, and it is lit up until half past nine each evening.

   Jion-ji Temple (Sagae)

   A large Buddhist temple at Sagae in Yamagata prefecture. Its principal image is a hidden Maitreya, and as a long-established pilgrimage site it was designated a national historic site in 2014; the main gate stands at 146 metres, overlooking the Yamagata basin.
