   Fasil Ghebbi

   The walled compound of stone castles and palaces begun by Emperor Fasilides in the 1630s, when Gondar became the first permanent Ethiopian capital in centuries. Mahdist raiders sacked it in 1888 and British bombing damaged it in 1941; it has been World Heritage since 1979.

   Fasilides' Bath

   A rectangular pool with a two-storey pavilion at its centre, built for Emperor Fasilides in the 17th century a little outside Gondar. It is filled once a year for Timkat, when crowds leap into the water at the blessing of the Epiphany.

   Kuskwam

   A church complex on a hill above Gondar founded by Empress Mentewab in the 1730s, where she withdrew after losing power. Her tomb and those of her son and grandson lie in the compound, and the ruined palace walls still stand around the church.

   Church of Debra Berhan Selassie

   A church of the late 17th century whose ceiling is covered with row upon row of winged angel faces looking down on the nave. The Mahdist raiders who burned Gondar's other churches in 1888 left this one alone, so its wall paintings survive whole.
