Grenada is the spice island: nutmeg and mace grow across it and were once a third of the world's supply, until Hurricane Ivan took most of the trees in 2004 and they had to be replanted.

St George's wraps its red-tiled roofs around a drowned volcanic crater and is among the prettiest harbours in the Caribbean. The world's first underwater sculpture park was sunk off Molinere in 2006 and is snorkelled from the beach.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral
The Catholic cathedral of St George's, whose tower survived Hurricane Ivan in 2004 while the roof and much of the town did not. The rebuilding took more than a decade and it reopened in 2022.

Grenada National Museum
A museum in a complex whose oldest range may go back to a French barracks of 1704, later part of the prison, then the Home Hotel until the 1960s. The government handed it over as a museum in 1976; displays run from Amerindian finds and slavery to whaling gear and a bathtub said to be Josephine Bonaparte's.

Fort George
A fort above the harbour of St George's, built by the French between 1706 and 1710 and first called Fort Royal. It is now police headquarters, and the courtyard where Maurice Bishop was shot in 1983 is inside it.
