   Eggenberg Castle, Graz

   The most important baroque palace in Styria, laid out as a calendar: 365 windows, 31 rooms on the main floor, 24 state rooms with 52 doors. The planetary room's ceiling paintings complete the scheme. It is World Heritage as part of the Graz listing.

   Graz Cathedral

   Built between 1438 and 1462 as the court church of Emperor Frederick III, then Jesuit university church from 1577 to 1773, when it acquired its Baroque fittings. The hall interior keeps medieval frescoes and a high altar of 1730-33; the mausoleum of Ferdinand II adjoins it.

   Schlossberg

   A wooded hill of 473 metres rising in the middle of Graz, on the site of the fortress. It is now open as a park, with the whole city below it, and holds cafés and an open-air stage.

   Kunsthaus Graz

   An art museum built in Graz for the European Capital of Culture programme of 2003, which has itself become the architectural landmark of the city. It specialises in art from the 1960s onward, and its biomorphic blue skin has earned it the name of the friendly alien.

   Mariatrost Basilica

   A baroque pilgrimage church on the summit of Purberg hill northeast of Graz and the principal pilgrimage site of Styria. The hill stands at 469 metres, so it is reached up more than two hundred steps known as the angels' stairs.

   Synagoge, Graz

   A synagogue on David Herzog Square in the Gries district on the right bank of the Mur. The congregation was formed in 1868 and built its first synagogue on the same site in 1895; it serves the Jews of Graz and of Styria and Carinthia.

   Rein Abbey

   A Cistercian abbey at Rein near Gratwein in Styria. It is the oldest surviving Cistercian community in the world, which has earned it the name of the cradle of Styria.

   Universalmuseum Joanneum

   The general museum of Styria, covering archaeology, geology, palaeontology and mineralogy, botany and zoology, history, art and folklore. It is the oldest museum in Austria and the largest in central Europe, with more than 4.5 million objects across thirteen departments on twelve sites.

   Lurgrotte

   The largest karst cave in the Eastern Alps, sixteen kilometres north of Graz. It runs through the Tanneben karst with one entrance on the Semriach side and another at Peggau, and the through-trip between them takes most of a day.

    Clock tower in Graz

    The 28-metre clock tower on the Schlossberg, emblem of the city, whose gilded hands were made in the wrong order, so the long one still tells the hours and the short one the minutes. Citizens bought it back in 1809 when Napoleon ordered the fortress razed.

   Styrian Armoury

   The largest historic armoury in the world, at Graz. As the frontier city holding back the Ottoman advance it stockpiled more than thirty thousand pieces of armour and firearms in the seventeenth century, and they remain in place, filling four floors.

   A church and mausoleum in Graz. Ferdinand II had it built as his own tomb, with the Italian architect Giovanni Pietro de Pomis in charge and the young Fischer von Erlach finishing the interior decoration.

   Herz-Jesu-Kirche

   A neo-Gothic church in Graz, built in the late nineteenth century. Its spire reaches 109 metres, the tallest in the city and among the tallest in Austria.

   A district in the north of Graz. The Mur passes through it before reaching the centre, so water-powered mills were established here early, and engineering is still the axis of the district.

   A district in the southeast of Graz. The football stadium and large retail developments are concentrated here, and the railway and motorway running south out of the city pass through it.

   Gösting Castle

   The ruins of a castle on a rocky hill northwest of Graz. From the twelfth century it guarded the road into the Mur valley; lightning set it alight in 1723 and it was never rebuilt.

   Franciscan Church

   A Franciscan church in the old town of Graz. Founded in the thirteenth century, it is among the oldest churches left in the city, and its cloister and bell tower give onto the lanes leading down to the Mur.
