   Hohensalzburg Fortress

   One of the largest fully preserved medieval castles in Europe, begun in 1077 and extended for six centuries by the prince-archbishops. It was never taken by force; the funicular up to it has run since 1892 and the state rooms include a late Gothic golden chamber.

   Salzburg Cathedral

   A baroque cathedral of 1628, the first of its kind north of the Alps, built after fire destroyed the Romanesque church. Mozart was baptised at the font just inside the door and later worked as its organist, unhappily.

   St Peter's Archabbey Salzburg

   A Benedictine abbey founded in 696 and running without interruption ever since, which makes it the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world. Its cemetery is cut into the rock face, and the restaurant attached claims to be the oldest in Europe.

   Mozart's birthplace

   The third-floor flat at 9 Getreidegasse where Mozart was born in 1756 and lived until he was seventeen. It holds his childhood violin, his clavichord and the family letters, and it is the most visited museum in Austria after Schönbrunn.

   Church of the Holy Trinity, Salzburg

   Fischer von Erlach's first building in Salzburg, finished in 1702, with a concave front pushed into a narrow square and an oval dome above — the Roman baroque he had learned in Italy, adapted to a cramped site.

   Franciscan Church, Salzburg

   One of the oldest churches in Salzburg, with a Romanesque nave and a soaring late Gothic choir added in the 1400s, so that the two halves are entirely different in feeling. A church has stood on the spot since the eighth century.

   Nonnberg Abbey

   A Benedictine convent founded about 714 on the rock below the fortress, and the oldest continuously existing nunnery north of the Alps. Maria von Trapp was a novice in it, which is why the film opens there — though the film used a different building.

   Kollegienkirche, Salzburg

   The university church, built by Fischer von Erlach between 1694 and 1707, whose white interior and convex front are considered his finest work. It stands at the end of a small square hemmed in by houses, which makes the facade burst out at you.

    Salzburg Zoo

    A zoo in the game park below Hellbrunn palace, where the archbishops kept animals from the seventeenth century. Its enclosures use the natural rock walls of the quarry as barriers, so several of them have no visible fence at all.

   Schloss Leopoldskron

   A rococo palace of 1736 on a lake south of the city, bought in 1918 by Max Reinhardt, who founded the Salzburg Festival and entertained half of Europe in it. Its lake terrace was used for the Sound of Music, and it is now a hotel and seminar centre.

   A glass and steel hall beside Salzburg airport built by the founder of Red Bull to hold his aircraft, helicopters and Formula One cars, with a two-star restaurant inside it. Entry is free and it is one of the more surreal museums in Europe.

   A museum at Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden in Germany. It sets out how Hitler and the Nazi leadership used this mountain settlement, which he began visiting in 1928, and it opened in 1999.

   Hallein Salt Mine

   An underground salt mine on the Dürrnberg plateau above Hallein in Austria. Salt has been cut here for more than 2,600 years, since the Celtic period, and it made nearby Salzburg into a powerful trading city.

   Silent-Night-Chapel

   A chapel at Oberndorf on the site of the church where Silent Night was first sung on Christmas Eve 1818, to a guitar because the organ was broken. The original church was demolished after flooding; the chapel replaced it and fills with visitors each December.

   Residenzplatz

   The main square of the old town, named after the archbishops' residence on it, with a baroque fountain of 1661 carved from local marble. It was cleared as a showpiece in the 1580s by demolishing over fifty houses and a graveyard.

   Dancing Master's House

   A building at 8 Makartplatz in Salzburg in Austria. The family of Leopold Mozart lived here from 1773 to 1787, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five; it is now a museum.

   Salzburg Residenz

   The archbishops' town palace, first recorded about 1120 and rebuilt in state rooms of the 1600s, where Mozart performed as a child and later as an employee. Its upper floors hold a picture gallery and the whole thing connects to the cathedral by a passage.

   Mozartplatz

   A square in the old town named for the Mozart statue put up on it in 1842, unveiled with his two surviving sons present. It sits between the Residenz and the river, and the Salzburg Museum occupies one side of it.

    Residenzgalerie Salzburg

    An old-master gallery on the upper floor of the Alte Residenz, the prince-archbishops' palace on Residenzplatz. The collection runs from the 16th to the 19th century and includes work by Rembrandt, Carel Fabritius, Carlo Saraceni and Hieronymus Francken II.
