   Mauthausen concentration camp

   A concentration camp on a hill above Mauthausen, twenty kilometres east of Linz, where prisoners were worked to death in a granite quarry. The 186 steps of the quarry stair, up which they carried stone blocks, are the memorial's central object; at least 90,000 people died in the camp and its subcamps.

   New Cathedral, Linz

   A neo-Gothic cathedral built between 1862 and 1924, the largest church in Austria by capacity at about twenty thousand, with a spire of 134.8 metres — deliberately two metres lower than Vienna's St Stephen's, which imperial rules required. Its windows include a history of Linz.

   Schloss Hartheim

   A Renaissance castle of 1600 at Alkoven, fourteen kilometres from Linz, which the Nazis used from 1940 as one of six killing centres of the T4 programme. About 30,000 disabled and psychiatric patients were murdered here; it is now a memorial and documentation centre.

   St. Florian Monastery

   An Augustinian monastery at Sankt Florian, founded in the ninth century and rebuilt in baroque between 1686 and 1750, with a marble hall and a library of 150,000 volumes. Anton Bruckner was a choirboy and later organist here and is buried beneath the organ he played.

   Lauriacum

   The Roman legionary town on the Danube limes at what is now Enns, downstream of Linz. Legio II Italica was garrisoned here from about AD 200, and tradition holds that St Florian was martyred on the spot in 304. Its remains belong to the UNESCO Danube Limes listing.

   Old Cathedral, Linz

   A Jesuit church built between 1669 and 1683, and the cathedral of Linz from 1785 to 1909. Bruckner was its organist for twelve years, and its twin towers were capped low so as not to outrank the Vienna cathedral.

   Wilhering Abbey

   A Cistercian abbey founded in 1146 at Wilhering, eight kilometres from Linz, whose church was rebuilt after a fire in 1733 with rococo decoration reckoned among the finest in Austria. The plain exterior gives no hint of it.

   Lentos Art Museum

   A modern art museum opened in May 2003 on the Danube, a 130-metre glass box by Weber and Hofer whose skin is lit from within at night. It succeeded the city's Neue Galerie and holds Austrian art from the nineteenth century onward, including work looted and later restituted.

   Ars Electronica Center

   A media art institution founded in 1979, which runs a festival, a research lab and a museum of the future on the Danube. Its Prix Ars Electronica is the oldest award in digital art, and the building's façade is a programmable screen of forty thousand LEDs.

    Basilica of St. Lawrence, Enns

    A basilica at Lorch in Enns, on the site of the Roman town of Lauriacum, where Saint Florian is said to have been martyred in 304. Excavations under it found four earlier churches and a Roman temple, and it was a bishop's seat in late antiquity.

   Rottenegg Castle

   A ruined castle near Rottenegg in Sankt Gotthard im Mühlkreis, built in the thirteenth century to guard a medieval trade road. It was abandoned after 1712 and has largely collapsed; the keep walls stand.

   Anton-Bruckner-Museum

   A museum in the schoolhouse at Ansfelden where Anton Bruckner was born in 1824, the son of the village schoolmaster. The rooms his family lived in are kept, and the organ tradition that shaped his music is the subject.

   Florianerbahn

   A museum tramway in Upper Austria on part of the narrow-gauge line that ran from Ebelsberg to Sankt Florian until 1973. It has been out of service because of construction work on the route.

   Ursuline Church of St. Michael

   A church in Linz dedicated to the Archangel Michael, built for the Ursulines between 1736 and 1772 to Johann Haslinger's design, with two towers and a late baroque front. It stands on the Landstraße and is now used for exhibitions as well as services.

   Atelierhaus Salzamt

   A cultural institution founded in 2009 in the former salt office on the Danube, combining a gallery with studios and residencies for artists. It was set up in the run-up to Linz's year as European Capital of Culture.

   A sculpture garden in Linz of over five thousand square metres holding work by more than twenty artists, mostly in stone and steel. It is free and open, on the slope of the Pöstlingberg side of the city.
