Hachijōjima is a volcanic island three hundred kilometres south of Tokyo and legally part of it — fifty-five minutes by air, and subtropical when the capital is freezing.

Hachijō-Fuji rises 854 metres and is walked up in a couple of hours. Uramigataki is a free outdoor hot spring behind a waterfall. The local sushi is marinated in soy and eaten with mustard rather than wasabi.

    Hachijō-jima Onsen

    The collective name for the hot springs of Hachijojima, seven baths scattered around the island. Uramigataki, an open-air pool beside a waterfall, is free to enter, and a day ticket covers the round of the others.

    A lighthouse on the southern cape of Hachijojima, among the largest in Japan and lit since 1947. Its beam carries far out over the Pacific, and the cliff below drops sheer into the sea.
