Hilton Head is a planned resort island on the South Carolina coast, built from 1956 with the rule that nothing may stand taller than the trees — so the signage is muted and the buildings hide.
The red-striped Harbour Town lighthouse is the landmark. More than a hundred kilometres of cycle path run through the woods and along hard sand at low tide. Dolphins follow the boats in Calibogue Sound.

Charlesfort-Santa Elena Site
An early colonial site on Parris Island in South Carolina. The traces of Charlesfort, a French settlement of 1562 abandoned the following year, overlap with those of Santa Elena, the sixteenth-century Spanish settlement whose fort was built directly on top of it.

Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum
A lighthouse at the northern end of Tybee Island in Georgia, above the point where the Savannah river meets the Atlantic. It is one of seven surviving colonial-era light towers in the United States, though it was substantially rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century.
