Ipoh grew rich on tin and then stopped, which is how it kept a colonial railway station, blocks of shophouses and a pace that Kuala Lumpur lost.

White coffee, roasted with margarine and served with condensed milk, was invented here and is drunk at the same old-town shops that always sold it. Limestone hills around the city hold cave temples, and murals fill the back lanes.

The state mosque of Perak, in Ipoh, finished in 1968 in a Moorish manner with a tall minaret. It stands beside the railway station and the town hall, in the row of white colonial buildings that gave Ipoh its nickname.

Masjid Jalan Paloh, Ipoh
One of the oldest mosques in Ipoh, built on Jalan Datoh in 1912 by Wan Muhammad Saleh, an officer of the colonial administration, with money from local merchants. Much has been rebuilt since, but the five-tiered minaret and the founder's gabled mausoleum stand as they were.
