   Sarawak State Museum

   The oldest museum in Borneo, founded in 1888 and opened in 1891 in a building modelled on a Normandy town hall — Charles Brooke had it built after Alfred Russel Wallace, who collected in Sarawak, urged him to. Its ethnographic collection remains its strength.

   Kuching Cat Museum

   A museum entirely about cats, in the city whose name means cat in Malay, holding some four thousand artefacts including an Egyptian mummified cat. It is exactly as odd as it sounds and Kuching is entirely unembarrassed about it.

   Fort Margherita

   A fort built in 1879 by the second white rajah of Sarawak against pirates on the river, and named after his wife. It never came under attack and now holds a gallery on the Brooke family's century of rule.

   Kubah National Park

   A national park west of Kuching. It is made up of sandstone plateau and rainforest, and nearly a hundred species of palm grow in it, which makes it one of the richest palm habitats in the world.

   St. Joseph's Cathedral, Kuching

   The mother church of the Catholic archdiocese of Kuching, rebuilt in 1968 on the hill above the old town after the Gothic cathedral of 1891 was condemned. Its curved roof and open sides suit the climate, and the archbishop's seat stands within.

   The Astana

   A residence built in 1870 by the second white rajah as a gift to his bride, on the north bank opposite the town. It is now the official home of the governor of Sarawak and opens only for festivals.

   Borneo Cultures Museum

   Opened in 2022 and the largest museum in Malaysia, on five floors above the old museum garden. The subject is Borneo rather than Sarawak alone: the peoples of the interior, their longhouses and textiles, and the natural history of the island.

   Kuching Wetlands National Park

   A national park of mangrove forest and tidal creeks north of Kuching, explored by boat. Proboscis monkeys feed in the trees at dusk and Irrawaddy dolphins come into the channels at the river mouth.

    Hong San Si Temple

    A Chinese temple in Kuching. Immigrants from Fujian built it in the nineteenth century; a street procession sets out from it at the lunar festival, and its timber carving is fine.

   Saint Peter Church (Padungan)

   The newest and largest church in Kuching, built in neo-Gothic style in the Padungan quarter and consecrated in 2017. Its form deliberately recalls the first St Joseph's Cathedral of 1891, which structural faults forced the city to pull down in 1969.

   Chinatown

   The Chinese commercial quarter of Kuching. Immigrants from Fujian and Chaozhou settled it in the later nineteenth century, and rows of old shophouses survive.

   Tua Pek Kong Temple, Kuching

   The oldest Chinese temple in Kuching, built in 1843 on the waterfront and dedicated to the deity Hokkien seafarers looked to for safe passage. It survived the fires that took most of the early town.

   Jong's Crocodile Farm and Zoo

   A crocodile farm and zoo opened south of Kuching in 1963. It breeds the saltwater crocodiles of Sarawak and shows the other wildlife of the region.

   Chinese History Museum

   A museum in the 1912 Chinese Chamber of Commerce building on the waterfront, covering the Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka and other communities that came to Sarawak — the trades each took up, and the clan associations that organised them.

   Ching San Yen Temple

   A Chinese temple on a hill above the Sarawak delta, built in the twentieth century on a hectare of ground and serving both Taoist and Buddhist devotion for the surrounding community.

   Textile Museum Sarawak

   A museum of Sarawak textiles opened in 1991 in a colonial pavilion of 1907, covering the weaving, beadwork and silver of the state's indigenous peoples. Iban pua kumbu cloth, woven to patterns received in dreams, is the strongest part.
