   Singapore Botanic Gardens

   A tropical garden founded in 1859 and the only World Heritage site in Singapore, listed in 2015. Rubber seedlings raised here from 1888 seeded the plantations of Malaya, and the orchid garden holds the largest display of its kind anywhere.

   Singapore Zoo

   A zoo of twenty-eight hectares opened in 1973 on a forested reservoir, built without bars — moats and vegetation do the containing, an approach copied widely since. Breakfast is served beside the orangutans.

   Jurong Bird Park

   Aviary in Singapore, opened in 1971 and closed in 2023 when its five thousand birds moved to the new park at Mandai. It had the tallest indoor waterfall in the world.

   Little India

   The Tamil quarter north of the river, dense with temples, gold shops and garland stalls, and busiest at Deepavali when the streets are lit end to end. The Mustafa Centre in the middle of it never closes.

   Legoland Malaysia

   A Legoland opened in September 2012 at Iskandar Puteri, the first in Asia. Miniland is the draw: Asian landmarks from Angkor Wat to the Petronas Towers built in brick, alongside forty-odd rides and a water park.

   The Istana

   The residence of the president, built in 1869 as Government House for the colonial governor and set in forty hectares of grounds. The gardens open to the public about five times a year, on public holidays.

   Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque

   The state mosque of Johor, built between 1892 and 1900 on the sultan's order, mixing Victorian and Moorish forms with four minarets shaped like British clock towers. It stands on a rise above the strait, facing Singapore.

   Masjid Malabar

   A mosque in Kampong Glam with three golden domes, the only one in Singapore serving the Malabar Muslim community from India's southwest coast. Its outer walls were later faced in lapis-blue tile, which is how it is recognised.

   Night Safari

   The world's first nocturnal zoo, opened at Mandai on 26 May 1994 at a cost of S$63 million. Its 35 hectares of secondary rainforest hold some 900 animals from over 100 species, seen from a tram loop and walking trails lit to resemble moonlight.

    Masjid Abdul Gaffoor

    A mosque in Little India, built between 1907 and 1910 to replace an earlier one and named after its founder. Above the main door is a sundial ringed by twenty-five panels of calligraphy naming prophets; it became a national monument in 1979.

   A planning area and new town in northeast Singapore, laid out from the 1970s as one of the earliest of the country's public housing estates. Its blocks were built taller than those before them, and it now holds a few hundred thousand people.

   Haw Par Villa

   A park built in 1937 by the brothers who made Tiger Balm, filled with more than a thousand statues illustrating Chinese myth and morality. Its Ten Courts of Hell, showing the punishments in graphic detail, has traumatised generations of Singaporean schoolchildren.

   Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

   A temple to Kali in Little India, begun in 1855 by Bengali labourers as a shrine and rebuilt several times since. Its tower is crowded with painted figures, and it stayed open through the bombing of the Second World War.

   Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, Singapore

   One of the oldest temples in Singapore, on Serangoon Road in Little India, dating back to 1855. It is dedicated to Vishnu, and its twenty-metre gopuram was raised in 1966 at a cost of 300,000 Singapore dollars.

   Johor Zoo

   A zoo of twelve and a half hectares in Johor Bahru, opened in 1928 from the sultan's private menagerie and the oldest in Malaysia. It keeps over a hundred species in a compact, old-fashioned layout.

   Japanese Garden

   One of three linked gardens around Jurong Lake in western Singapore, laid out in the 1970s with ponds, bridges and a stone lantern walk. It was rebuilt in the 2010s as part of a larger lakeside park.

   Kent Ridge Park

   Forty-seven hectares of ridge between the university and the science park, left largely as secondary forest and used for birdwatching. It was the ground of the last stand of the Malay Regiment in February 1942, remembered in a museum at its edge.

   Chesed-El Synagogue

   A synagogue on Oxley Rise built in 1905 by a Baghdadi Jewish merchant who had made his fortune in Singapore, its name meaning the grace of God. It was made a national monument in 1998 and is still in use.

    Masjid Bencoolen

    An old mosque on Bencoolen Street in Singapore. Indian Muslim immigrants from Bengkulu founded it in 1824; the present building was rebuilt in 2004 and is integrated with a hotel.
