Iquitos is the largest city on earth that no road reaches. Everything arrives by river or by air, and the Amazon runs past it four kilometres wide in flood.

The rubber boom of the 1890s left tiled mansions and an iron house shipped in pieces from Europe. Belén market floats for half the year. Lodges downriver are the point: pink dolphins, night caiman, and forest that starts at the water.

    Estadio Max Augustín

    A stadium for 24,576 spectators built in 1942 and rebuilt in 2005 with artificial turf and a running track, when it served as a venue for the FIFA Under-17 World Championship. The clubs of Iquitos play their home matches here.

    Cathedral of Iquitos

    The neo-Gothic cathedral of Iquitos, begun in 1911 on the site of an older church, opened on 16 March 1919 and completed with its tower in 1924. Declared national heritage in 1996, it stands on the corner of the Plaza de Armas.

    BAP América

    A river gunboat built at Liverpool in 1904 for the prefecture of Loreto, which reached Iquitos on 11 May 1905 and was commissioned that August. She is the oldest warship of her kind still afloat anywhere and is listed as cultural heritage of Peru.
