   Senkaku Shrine

   A Shinto shrine on Uotsuri-jima in the Senkaku Islands, uninhabited and closed. The islands are administered by Japan and claimed by China and Taiwan; landing is not permitted, so effectively nobody visits the shrine.

   Miyaradunchi

   An old residence on Ishigaki island in Okinawa prefecture. A local official built it about 1819; it is an important cultural property as the representative building of the Yaeyama islands, and its garden is designated a place of scenic beauty.

   A museum opened in Ishigaki in Okinawa prefecture in 1972, covering the archaeology, history, art and folklore of Ishigaki and the Yaeyama islands.

   Tōjin-baka

   A Chinese-style memorial above the west coast of Ishigaki to the labourers who died here in 1852. They had risen against their treatment aboard an American ship carrying them to California, come ashore on the island, and were hunted down by armed parties.

   Furusutobaru Castle

   A site of stone enclosures in Ishigaki in Okinawa prefecture. It was taken for a Ryukyuan gusuku, but only domestic objects and no weapons have been found, so it is now read as a settlement; it was designated a national historic site in 1978.

   Tōrin-ji Temple

   The oldest temple on Ishigaki, founded in 1614, whose pair of guardian kings carved in 1737 are the finest wooden sculpture on the island. The tsunami of 1771 swept away the hall but left the figures standing.
