Jackson has four arches of shed elk antlers on its square and cowboy bars behind them, but the reason to come is out of the window: the Tetons rise more than two thousand metres straight off the valley floor with no foothills at all.

Oxbow Bend takes the sunrise reflection. The elk refuge north of town winters thousands of animals and runs sleighs among them. Yellowstone's south gate is an hour further.

    National Museum of Wildlife Art

    A museum of wildlife art built into a hillside above the elk refuge, its walls of Arizona sandstone laid to look like an outcrop. The collection runs from Bierstadt and Rungius to contemporary work, and the windows face the animals the pictures are of.

    George Washington Memorial Park

    The town square of Jackson, made into a park in 1934 on the open ground the settlement grew around. Arches of elk antlers, gathered on the National Elk Refuge by Boy Scouts and rebuilt every few years, frame each corner; a stone memorial to John Colter stands at the centre.

    Jackson National Fish Hatchery

    A federal fish hatchery at Jackson, Wyoming, run by the Fish and Wildlife Service and raising trout for the rivers of the region. It stands inside the National Elk Refuge, where thousands of elk winter.
