Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. No technical climbing is needed, which is why so many people underestimate it; the routes take five to nine days.

The same airport serves the northern safari circuit — the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro crater, an intact caldera twenty kilometres across with its own resident wildlife. Arusha and Moshi are the base towns.

    Mount Meru

    A dormant stratovolcano of 4,562 metres seventy kilometres west of Kilimanjaro, and the fifth highest mountain in Africa. Its eastern side collapsed in a huge landslide, leaving a horseshoe crater; climbers use it to acclimatise.

    Arusha National Park

    A small national park covering Mount Meru, the Momella lakes and the Ngurdoto crater. It is one of the few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris are allowed, since there are no lions in it.

    Duluti Lake

    A crater lake of sixty-three hectares fourteen kilometres from Arusha, ringed by a forest reserve. Canoes go out on it for birdwatching, with Meru and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro behind.
