   Kigali Genocide Memorial

   The memorial to the genocide of 1994, where the remains of more than a quarter of a million people are buried in mass graves on the hillside. Its exhibition is unflinching and includes a room for the children who were killed.

   Kandt House Museum

   A house built in 1908 for Richard Kandt, the German doctor who chose this hill as the colonial seat in 1907 and thereby founded Kigali. It now holds a museum of the city's beginnings and of Rwandan natural history, with snakes in the basement.

   A Catholic church on a hill in central Kigali where large numbers of people took shelter in April 1994 and where many of them were killed. Its wartime conduct has been argued over in Rwandan and French courts ever since.

   Ntarama Genocide Memorial

   A church southeast of Kigali where about five thousand people who had taken shelter were killed in April 1994. It is kept as one of the national memorials, with the victims' clothing and possessions left in the nave.

   Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park

   A hundred and twenty hectares of restored wetland between two districts of Kigali, opened by the environment authority as an eco-tourism park. Ponds, riverine woodland and a medicinal plant garden replaced what had been a dumping ground.

   Rwanda Art Museum

   The former residence of President Habyarimana, opened as an art museum in 2009. In the garden lies the wreckage of the aircraft shot down over this house on 6 April 1994, the event that began the genocide, left exactly where it fell.
