   Kokura Castle

   A castle on a site fortified from 1569 and rebuilt by Hosokawa Tadaoki in 1602. It burned in 1866 and was reconstructed in 1959; the top floor gives the view and a garden of the lord's residence adjoins it.

   Akama Jingū

   A shrine at Shimonoseki with a vermilion water gate facing the strait, dedicated to the child emperor Antoku, who drowned at Dan-no-ura in 1185 when the Taira were destroyed. The graves of Taira warriors stand in the grounds.

   Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art

   A municipal art museum of 1974 by Isozaki Arata, two square tubes cantilevered out of a hilltop — locals call it the twin binoculars. The collection is European and modern Japanese painting, and the terrace looks down on the industrial coast.

   Kawachi Wisteria Garden

   Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a private garden known worldwide for its wisteria tunnels. It opens only during the flowering at the end of April and start of May, by advance reservation, so the timing has to be planned.

   Space World

   A space-themed park at Yahatahigashi, built in 1990 on the site of the Yawata steelworks and closed at the end of 2017. It had six roller coasters and a full-size Space Shuttle mock-up; the ground has since been redeveloped as an outlet mall.

   Kōzan-ji Temple

   A Soto Zen temple at Chofu whose Buddha hall of 1320 is the oldest Zen hall in Japan and a National Treasure. In 1864 Takasugi Shinsaku raised his irregular militia here and marched on the domain government, an act that put Choshu on the road to the Meiji Restoration.

   Mekari Shrine

   A shrine on the shore of the Kanmon strait at Moji, whose Mekari ritual is held before dawn on lunar New Year: three priests wade into the current with torches to cut seaweed for the gods. It is one of the oldest recorded rites in Kyushu.

   Kyushu Railway History Museum

   A railway museum run by JR Kyushu at Mojiko, in the red-brick former headquarters of the Kyushu Railway Company built in 1891. Opened in 2003, it shows retired locomotives and carriages alongside a hall of models and a driving simulator.

    Shimonoseki City Archaeological Museum

    An archaeological museum opened in 1995 beside the Ayaragigo site, showing what came out of the Yayoi settlements of this coast: pottery, bronze, and the tools of a community that traded across the strait to the continent.

   A large natural and human history museum whose skeleton hall runs a line of mounted dinosaurs, and whose local galleries cover the coal and steel that made this city. It is known as the Museum of the Journey of Life, which is the exhibition's structure as well as its name.

   Karato Market is the fugu and seafood market of Shimonoseki, with sushi stalls set up at the weekend for the Ikiiki Bakangai. It is five minutes by boat from Mojikō.

   Sumiyoshi Shrine

   The first shrine of Nagato province, whose main hall of 1370 is a National Treasure — nine bays under a single roof, with five separate sanctuaries in a row, a form found nowhere else. Empress Jingu is said to have founded it before her expedition to Korea.

   Buzenda

   The nightlife quarter of Shimonoseki near the station, a compact grid of small bars and eating houses. It is where the city goes for pufferfish, which is landed here in greater quantity than anywhere else in Japan.

   Fukuju-ji Temple

   An Obaku Zen temple in Kokurakita founded by the Ogasawara lords in the seventeenth century, with a Chinese-born abbot and Ming-style detailing to match. The novelist Matsumoto Seicho was born nearby and the temple appears in his work.

   Shimonoseki City Museum of History

   A museum opened in 2019 on the hill above the strait, holding material on the Chofu domain and on the Bakumatsu years, when Shimonoseki bombarded foreign shipping and was shelled in return by four navies at once.

   Ayaragigō Site

   A Yayoi settlement site on the coastal terrace, dug from the 1960s, with storage pits, ditches and a great quantity of pottery. It was saved from a sand quarry after a public campaign and is now a national historic site with a park over it.

   A city art museum opened in 1983, holding work by artists of this region — above all Kishida Ryusei, whose portraits of his daughter Reiko are among the best-known Japanese paintings of the early twentieth century.

    Awashima Shrine

    A shrine in Moji dedicated to Sukunabikona, the small god of medicine and needlework. On 8 February seamstresses bring their bent and broken needles here for the hari-kuyo rite, laying them to rest in soft tofu.
