   Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum

   The prefectural art museum, opened in 1995 in a park with the museum of nature and history and the library. It holds surrealist work — Magritte and Ernst — alongside artists from Miyazaki, which is an unusual combination for a regional Japanese museum.

   Miyazaki Jingū

   Miyazaki Jingū enshrines Jimmu, the first emperor, and is the centre of Miyazaki as the home of the myths. Its avenue of ancient cypresses is imposing.

   Heiwadai Park

   A hill park in Miyazaki laid out around a tower of thirty-seven metres, built in 1940 from stones sent from around the world. A garden below it holds replicas of the clay haniwa figures found in local tombs.

   Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History

   The prefectural museum of nature and history, covering the geology and wildlife of the region and the archaeology of the Hyuga plain. Four thatched farmhouses have been moved into the grounds behind it and are open to walk through.

   Aya Castle

   A castle above the Aya river rebuilt in 1985, the first modern reconstruction in Japan to follow medieval method in timber rather than concrete. The Ito clan held the original before Hideyoshi's campaigns swept through Kyushu.

   Aoshima Shrine

   Aoshima Shrine stands on an island ringed by the washboard rock formations. Pilgrims come to it for matchmaking, and the walk around the island through its subtropical vegetation is fitting for the far south.

   Sadowara Castle

   A castle of the Ito clan above Sadowara, and the seat of a small domain through the Edo period. The keep is long gone; earthworks and cut-through ridges survive on the hill, and the lord's residence at the foot has been excavated and partly rebuilt.

   Eda Shrine

   A shrine to Izanagi, the male creator of the Japanese myths. The pond beside it, Misogi-ga-ike, is where he is said to have purified himself after the underworld — the act from which Amaterasu and Susanoo were born, and the origin of Shinto purification rites.

   Kota Shrine

   A shrine to Futodama, Empress Jingu and Emperor Ojin whose main and worship halls are Muromachi-period buildings and Important Cultural Properties. The autumn festival includes a form of ritual falconry that has been performed here for centuries.

    Ikime Kofun Cluster

    A group of burial mounds at Miyazaki including several large keyhole tombs, the biggest more than a hundred metres long. It is the largest such cluster in southern Kyushu and is taken as the burial ground of the chiefs who controlled the Hyuga plain.
