Kagoshima faces Sakurajima across the bay, a volcano that erupts in some fashion most weeks and dusts the city with ash. A ferry crosses to it in fifteen minutes, day and night.

The eruption of 1914 joined the island to the mainland with lava you can now walk over. Foot baths run along the waterfront. Black pork, shirokuma shaved ice, and the sand baths at Ibusuki further south are the local pleasures.

Kagoshima Castle
The site of Kagoshima Castle, also called Tsurumaru, the seat of the Shimazu clan, whose reconstructed Gomon gate has recovered its scale. From the Shiroyama lookout behind it, Sakurajima stands directly across the bay.

Terukuni Shrine
A shrine in Kagoshima to Shimazu Nariakira, the lord who set up Japan's first Western-style factories here in the 1850s. A white torii of unusual size stands at its entrance, below the castle site.

Sengan-en
Sengan-en is the villa garden of the Shimazu family, whose composition borrows Sakurajima as its backdrop to overwhelming effect. The Shoko Shuseikan, part of the World Heritage site of Japan's industrial revolution, adjoins it.

Kagoshima City Aquarium
Io World Kagoshima Aquarium is built around the whale shark Yūyū and displays of the marine life of the water off Sakurajima. It stands beside the ferry terminal, which puts it on the volcano circuit.

St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Kagoshima
The cathedral of the Catholic diocese of Kagoshima, rebuilt in 1999. Francis Xavier landed in this city in August 1549, the beginning of Christianity in Japan; a monument to him stands in the park beside the church.

Ichiuji Castle
A hill castle at Hioki where Francis Xavier met Shimazu Takahisa in 1549 and was given permission to preach in Satsuma — the first such licence granted to a Christian missionary in Japan. The earthworks remain and a stone marks the meeting.

The prefectural history centre, opened in 1983 on the site of Tsurumaru castle, whose stone walls and moat it stands inside. The subject is Satsuma: the Shimazu, the trade with the Ryukyus, and the men from this domain who made the Meiji Restoration.

The Shōko Shūseikan is a museum in the machine works of the Shimazu family's Shūseikan complex, and the core of the World Heritage site of Japan's Meiji industrial revolution. Admission is combined with Sengan-en.

Ishibashi Park
A park built around three of the five stone arch bridges the Shimazu lords threw across the Kotsuki river late in the Edo period. Floods swept two away in 1993; the survivors were dismantled, moved here and rebuilt, with a museum explaining the masons' work.
