   Kushiro-shitsugen National Park

   Japan's largest marshland, some 269 square kilometres of reed bed and meandering river in eastern Hokkaido, made a national park in 1987. It is the breeding ground of the red-crowned crane, which was thought extinct here until a handful were found in 1924.

   Itsukushima Shrine

   A shrine in Kushiro in Hokkaido, founded in the early nineteenth century. A Yakushi or Kannon figure carved by Enkū in its keeping is a prefectural cultural property.

   Kushiro City Museum

   A regional museum whose collection began in 1936 in a room at the local water board and moved into this building in 1983. Displays cover the geology and wildlife of the marshes along with Jomon, Satsumon and Ainu material, and the fossil jaw that named the Kushiro tapir.

   Moshiriya Chashi

   The remains of an Ainu fortified site, a chashi, in Kushiro in Hokkaido. It occupies high ground and is said to have been raised by the Ainu chief Tomikara Aino in the Hōreki era, between 1751 and 1764; it is one of eleven chashi designated together as a national historic site.
