   Space Needle

   A 184-metre observation tower built for the 1962 World's Fair in a year, with a flying-saucer top and a restaurant that turns. The Loupe, a rotating glass floor installed in 2018, is the only one of its kind, and the elevators take forty-one seconds.

   Museum of Pop Culture

   A pop culture museum in a crumpled aluminium and steel building by Frank Gehry, funded by Paul Allen and opened in 2000 as the Experience Music Project. Jimi Hendrix's guitars and the Nirvana archive are the core; a monorail runs through the building.

   Seattle Art Museum

   The city art museum, with a strong Northwest Coast Native and African collection, in a 1991 Robert Venturi building downtown. Jonathan Borofsky's four-storey Hammering Man swings its arm outside it, and the Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront belongs to the museum too.

   Capitol Hill

   The densest residential district in Seattle, immediately east of downtown, and the centre of the city's gay life since the 1970s. Pike-Pine holds the bars and record shops; Volunteer Park with its 1912 conservatory and the Asian Art Museum is at the north end.

   Seattle Center

   The 30-hectare campus left over from the 1962 World's Fair, holding the Space Needle, MoPOP, the Pacific Science Center, the opera and Chihuly Garden and Glass. The monorail built for the fair still runs from it to downtown in two minutes.

   Ballard

   A formerly independent city annexed in 1907, settled by Scandinavian fishermen and shingle mill workers, and still the base of the Alaska fishing fleet. The Nordic Museum is here, and the Ballard Locks beside it lift boats between the sound and Lake Union, with a salmon ladder.

   Downtown Seattle

   The central business district, compact by the standards of the west coast because hills, Elliott Bay and filled tideflats hem it in. Pike Place Market has traded since 1907, the 1962 monorail crosses it, and the 2004 Koolhaas public library is in the middle of it.

   The Museum of Flight

   One of the largest private air and space museums in the world, at Boeing Field, holding about 175 aircraft including a Concorde, the first jet Air Force One and a Space Shuttle trainer. The original 1909 Boeing factory, the Red Barn, is part of it.

   Fremont

   A neighbourhood in north Seattle annexed in 1891, named after the founders' home town in Nebraska, and self-declared centre of the universe. A 5.5-metre Cold War statue of Lenin, brought from Slovakia in 1993, and a concrete troll under the bridge are its landmarks.

    Queen Anne

    A hilltop neighbourhood northwest of downtown, named for the architectural style of its 1890s mansions, and the highest point in central Seattle at 139 metres. Kerry Park on the south slope is where the postcard view of the skyline and Mount Rainier is taken.

   Gas Works Park

   Nineteen acres on the north shore of Lake Union, laid out around the rusting cracking towers of a coal gasification plant that ran from 1906 to 1956. The city bought the site in 1962 and Richard Haag's design opened it as a park in 1975; it joined the National Register in 2013.

   Seattle Great Wheel

   A 53-metre Ferris wheel on Pier 57, opened in 2012 and the first of its kind on the west coast, with enclosed gondolas that hang out over Elliott Bay. Sunset over the Olympic Mountains is the ride to take.

   Pioneer Square

   Seattle began here in 1852, and after the Great Fire of 1889 the whole quarter was rebuilt within a year in brick and stone. Those Richardsonian Romanesque blocks still set its character, gathered around the small triangular plaza at First Avenue and Yesler Way.

   Pacific Science Center

   A science centre in the arched white pavilion Minoru Yamasaki designed for the 1962 fair, with a tropical butterfly house, a planetarium and two IMAX screens. Its five slender arches over the reflecting pools are the most photographed structure at Seattle Center after the Needle.

   West Seattle

   The neighbourhoods west of the Duwamish River, an independent city from 1902 until Seattle annexed it in 1907. Alki Beach is where the first settlers landed in November 1851, and the water taxi from downtown is the pleasant way to reach it.

   Belltown

   The most densely populated neighbourhood in Seattle, on the downtown waterfront on ground levelled by the Denny regrade, which sluiced an entire hill into the bay. Cheap studios made it an artists' quarter in the 1980s; it is now restaurants, clubs and residential towers.

   Seattle Aquarium

   An aquarium on Piers 59 and 60 devoted to Puget Sound and the north Pacific, opened in 1977. Its sea otters, rescued as pups, are the draw, and a 2024 Ocean Pavilion added a 1.8-million-litre tropical tank.

   University District

   The district around the University of Washington in northeast Seattle, whose main street, University Way NE, is known as the Ave. Cheap restaurants, bookshops and the campus cherry blossom in the Quad each spring are what bring people up here.

   Living Computers: Museum + Labs

   A computer museum in SoDo, funded by Paul Allen, whose distinguishing feature was that its mainframes worked — visitors logged in to a running PDP-10 and a Cray. It closed in 2020 and its collection was dispersed at auction.

    Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture

    The natural history and culture museum of the University of Washington, founded in 1885 and the Washington State Museum since 1899. Its 2019 building puts the laboratories behind glass so visitors watch specimens being prepared; the Northwest Native collection is exceptional.
