La Paz is spread through a canyon at 3,600 metres with El Alto on the rim above it, and is the highest seat of government in the world. The air takes a day or two.

Cable cars, not trains, do the commuting — the largest urban network of them anywhere, opened in 2014, and the cheapest sightseeing in South America. The Witches' Market sells remedies, Valle de la Luna is eroded into spires, and the Uyuni salt flat is a night bus away.

Plaza Murillo
The central square of La Paz, holding the presidential palace, the congress and the cathedral. It is named for Pedro Murillo, hanged here in 1810; the clock on the congress building runs backwards, an anti-colonial gesture introduced in 2014.

Basilica of San Francisco, La Paz, Bolivia
A Catholic church on Plaza San Francisco in central La Paz, dedicated to Francis of Assisi. It was built between 1743 and 1772 and its tower was added at the end of the nineteenth century; Andean motifs are carved into its mestizo baroque front.

Palacio Quemado
The residence of the president of Bolivia from 1853 to 2018, better known by its nickname, the burnt palace. It stands on Plaza Murillo in La Paz beside the cathedral and opposite the legislature, and gave up its role to the Casa Grande del Pueblo on 9 August 2018.

The national archaeological museum of Bolivia, two blocks east of the Prado in La Paz. The national institute of archaeology runs it, and it is regarded as the principal museum of the country.

Museo de Arte Antonio Paredes Candia
An art museum in El Alto opened in 2002 around the collection the folklorist Antonio Paredes Candia left to the city. By 2011 it held 503 works of art and 11,931 books, with work by Marina Nunez del Prado, Gil Imana and other Bolivian artists.
