   Fort Jesus Museum

   A fort built by the Portuguese from 1593 to hold Mombasa against the Omanis, and taken and retaken nine times over the following two centuries. Its Italian architect laid it out as a figure of a man; it is World Heritage and holds the town's museum.

   Holy Ghost Cathedral, Mombasa

   The Catholic cathedral of Mombasa, begun after Spiritan missionaries opened their first station in the town in 1889 and outgrew the house they had been using. It remains the seat of the archdiocese.

   Haller Park

   A park at Bamburi made out of an exhausted cement quarry from 1971 onward by the agronomist Rene Haller, who worked out which plants would grow on bare rock and built a food chain upward from them. Giraffes, hippos and buffalo live in it now.

   HMT Gulland

   An Isles-class trawler built for the Royal Navy during the Second World War for anti-submarine patrol and minesweeping, one of nearly two hundred of the type. She was sold out of naval service in 1946.

   Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve

   A marine park of ten square kilometres inside a reserve of two hundred, along the reef off Mombasa. It is the main snorkelling and diving ground on this coast, and the sheltered water suits windsurfing.

   Mandhry Mosque

   The oldest mosque in Mombasa and the second oldest in Kenya, founded in 1570 by settlers from Oman. The Mandhry family has looked after it for centuries, and its carved minaret stands over the old town lanes.
