Minamidaitō-son travel guide

Minamidaitō lies four hundred kilometres east of Okinawa, a raised atoll walled all round by cliff with no harbour — ships stand off and passengers are lifted aboard in a crane basket.

It was settled in 1900 from Hachijōjima, so the speech and the festivals carry traces of the Izu islands rather than Okinawa. Sugarcane is still the business, limestone caves run under the fields, and almost nobody visits.
