   The Catholic cathedral of Maputo, finished in 1944 in white art deco with a tapering spire, and the building that defines Independence Square. It was closed for years after independence and reopened in the 1980s.

   A natural history museum in the Polana district of Maputo, Mozambique. It opened in 1913 as a provincial museum and moved into its present building in 1932-33.

   Tunduru Gardens

   A public garden in central Maputo laid out in 1885 by the English gardener Thomas Honney for the Portuguese authorities, with jacarandas and acacias and the tennis courts of the national federation inside it.

   A building on Praça 25 de Junho in Maputo, Mozambique. Its name means 'yellow house'; built in the eighteenth century, it blends Portuguese and Indian architecture and is taken to be the oldest building in the city.

   Maputo Fortress

   A square fort of red stone on Praça 25 de Junho, built by the Portuguese in the eighteenth century and rebuilt in the nineteenth. It holds the tomb of the Gaza king Ngungunhane, brought back from exile, and a collection of colonial statuary removed from the streets.
