   Lake Missoula

   A glacial lake that formed repeatedly in western Montana between fifteen and thirteen thousand years ago, at the end of the last ice age. It covered about 7,770 square kilometres and held 2,100 cubic kilometres of water, half the volume of Lake Michigan; its shorelines are a National Natural Landmark.

   A mountain of 1,572 metres immediately east of the University of Montana at Missoula. A large concrete M sits on its western slope, 189 metres up.

   A peak of 2,787 metres in the Bitterroot range in western Montana. It stands in Missoula county southwest of Missoula and is visible to the south from Highway 12 east of Lolo Pass.

   A mountain rising northeast of downtown Missoula in Montana. Its Salish name means the thing that blocks the way, and it was saved from development in 1996 when the private land was bought.

   Fort Fizzle

   A log barricade the army threw across the Lolo canyon in July 1877 to stop the Nez Perce. The Nez Perce simply climbed around it and continued, without a shot fired — hence the name, given by the soldiers themselves. A roadside site marks the spot.
