Montrose keeps the Ute Indian Museum on land that belonged to Chief Ouray, who negotiated over western Colorado with Washington and lost it anyway. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is so narrow and so deep that parts of its floor get half an hour of sunlight a day; the Painted Wall drops six hundred and eighty-five metres.

Telluride, in a box canyon ninety minutes south, runs a free gondola between town and village and skis in winter. The San Juan Skyway loops past Ouray's hot springs and Silverton.

    Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    A canyon so deep and so narrow that parts of the floor get about half an hour of sunlight a day. The Painted Wall drops 685 metres, the highest cliff in Colorado. There is no road to the bottom; the descent routes are unmaintained scrambles requiring a permit.
