Martha's Vineyard has no bridge to the mainland, and its year-round population of about twenty thousand rises past a hundred thousand in July. Oak Bluffs began as a Methodist camp meeting and its tents hardened into hundreds of gingerbread cottages, painted in every colour.
The clay cliffs at Aquinnah are banded red and grey under a brick lighthouse. Jaws was filmed here in 1974 and teenagers still jump off the bridge it used. Ferries run from Woods Hole in forty-five minutes.

Flying Horses Carousel
The oldest operating platform carousel in the United States, built in New York and moved to Oak Bluffs in the 1880s. Riders still grab for the brass ring as they pass, a survival from carousels almost everywhere else; it was made a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Union Chapel
An octagonal church building at Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard. It was built in 1870 as a non-denominational place of worship in the middle of the Methodist camp meeting settlement of Wesleyan Grove, and still serves for worship and for local cultural events and performances.
