Nosy Be lies off the northwest corner of Madagascar and is the easiest part of the country to reach and to be in — direct flights, resorts, and a warm sea.

Ylang-ylang is grown for perfume and scents the air near the plantations. Lokobe reserve holds black lemurs. Whale sharks pass between September and December, and Nosy Iranja is a sandbar joining two islands at low tide.

    Lokobe Reserve

    The last stand of primary lowland forest on Nosy Be, protected as a park on the southeastern side of the island. Black lemurs, boa constrictors and the Nosy Be panther chameleon live in it, and the visit is made by pirogue and on foot with a village guide.

    Mont Lokobe

    A forested massif at the southeastern tip of Nosy Be holding the last primary forest on the island, protected as a strict reserve. Black lemurs, chameleons and boas live in it, and guides walk visitors up from the village of Ampasipohy.

    Antaninaomby

    A volcanic peak of about 622 metres on Nosy Komba, the island between Nosy Be and the Madagascan mainland. Long extinct, its summit once carried a rest house where fever-worn missionaries were sent to recover.
