The Noto peninsula runs into the Sea of Japan north of Kanazawa, and its farmed hills and fished shore were the first Japanese landscape recognised as a globally important agricultural system.

Shiroyone Senmaida steps a thousand tiny rice paddies down to the water, lit at night in winter. Wajima has made lacquerware for centuries. A severe earthquake on New Year's Day 2024 hit the peninsula hard, and parts of it are still rebuilding.

    Wajima Museum of Urushi Art

    A museum at Wajima devoted to lacquer, the only one of its kind, showing both the local Wajima-nuri and lacquer work from elsewhere in Asia. The local craft takes over a hundred separate steps to complete a single piece.

    Mawaki Site

    A Jōmon settlement site at Mawaki in Noto town in Ishikawa prefecture, designated a national historic site in 1989. Hundreds of dolphin bones excavated here show that the settlement lived by hunting them.

    Sōji-ji So-in Temple

    The original head temple of Soto Zen, founded at Wajima in 1321 by Keizan Jokin. Fire destroyed most of it in 1898 and the main seat moved to Yokohama, but the compound was rebuilt and keeps its rank as founding temple.

    Notojima Aquarium

    A public aquarium on the northern shore of Notojima island at Nanao in Ishikawa prefecture. It belongs to the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is a museum registered with the education ministry.
